EQT is a venture capital firm. The company operates in the investment industry and focuses on private equity and infrastructure investments. The company's portfolio includes companies in sectors such as technology, healthcare and industrials. The business is global with a primary presence in Europe, North America and Asia. EQT was founded in 1994 and is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.

It seems there isn’t a thread for this yet. Quite a surprise  As a retail investor, I’ve been thinking for a long time about what the best way to gain exposure to the growth of the private market (listaamaton markkina) would be, while still maintaining decent liquidity. EQT, primarily owned by Investor AB, has been on my radar for a long time, but yesterday I finally decided to jump in. What makes EQT interesting to me is the nature of its recurring management fees: they clearly make up the majority of revenue and operating profit, and they are predictable, long-term income streams instead of fluctuating with exit returns. On top of that, of course, are the performance fees. Yesterday I calculated a basic scenario: if you forecast a moderate 6% annual growth in EQT’s so-called fee-generating AUM, management fees could rise from the €2.3 billion level to about €2.9 billion over a five-year period, and this stable income stream drops down to EBITDA (käyttökate) with a margin of over 50%. This is the foundation that I think would justify some kind of “compounder” discussion (maybe even valuation?) regarding the company and makes this case interesting. Some additional perspective is provided by yesterday’s news, where EQT’s main owner Investor AB bought 2.3 million shares and the incoming Chairman of the Board Jean Eric Salata bought a 670 million SEK stake. EQT’s stock has dropped significantly in recent weeks from the level of about 370 SEK to below 300 SEK. To me at least, this pricing doesn’t reflect any kind of compounder nature, the growth potential of the private market, or the stability & longevity of current income streams. A while ago, I listened to an interview with the incoming Chairman Salata, and an interesting point about EQT funds’ investment strategy stuck with me. They invest heavily in thematic investments, where the main roles are played by country-specific businesses, such as various service companies and underdeveloped sectors especially in Asia, and on the other hand, strong secular trends, such as healthcare. Salata’s own background is in the Asian private equity market, where EQT made a large acquisition several years ago, after which Salata, who was an entrepreneur there, joined EQT and has now, years later, made a significant additional investment. This opening post wasn’t meant to be the analysis of the century, nor am I capable of that. But as a whole, I think EQT is at least worth following for those who want exposure to the growth of the private market. Personally, I consider the company a relatively predictable, scalable option for a portfolio, equipped with strong (and free) cash flow. It also brings in that so-called idiosyncratic weighting. Maybe in times like these, one could own worse things?

Thanks Timo for opening a thread for this company!  I read through this short thread and clicked through the links. I went through the company’s website with the help of translators, as I’m not that proficient in English. I also needed a bit of help from AI, even though I didn’t quite grasp everything even with its assistance.  Content warning: contains speculation (gut feeling), potential misunderstandings, typos, and not-so-sophisticated reflection or independent number crunching. I wrote down what I consider the essential points and my own thoughts: What’s interesting about the company is the stable revenue streams, high profitability, and how at least the insiders seem to trust the company based on their purchases. These points have already been well highlighted in the thread. Perhaps what interests me most about the company is the combination of safe and profitable operations, but also components with significant growth potential (e.g., investments in Asian private equity and the Coller Capital acquisition: private equity secondaries market) - though, of course, significant growth potential often implies high risk as well. As stated in the write-up behind the link above, EQT’s share price has dropped significantly due to general AI concerns in the software industry, which surely worries some, but on the other hand, makes others see a buying opportunity. And whether the AI concern is particularly justified, I don’t know… but on the other hand, the company is also diversified into healthcare, as well as versatilely into infrastructure and real estate. And it should be remembered that the company has also diversified itself internationally, if I can put it that way.  People comment a lot on the price drop and don’t understand what’s causing it - of course, quite general comments have been given on what might be the cause, but often “this makes no sense” comments give me the feeling that, at least in hindsight, very sensible reasons for the drops are found, which even I might understand.  Management on the future: EQT’s Head of Private Capital Per Franzén stated after mid-January that the company is entering this year with confidence, as its position to attract capital from private markets is stronger than ever. EQT intends to continue developing companies, infrastructure, and real estate through active ownership, global insight, and long-term thinking. He also emphasized that the merger with Coller Capital strengthens the company’s ability to provide even better investment solutions to customers worldwide. According to the materials, the previous year was a record for EQT; the value of exits was 34 billion euros, and the amount of fundraising doubled to 26 billion euros; additionally, the company’s revenue grew by 16 percent. If someone has the skills and the time, it would be nice to get a more comprehensive analysis of the company’s figures as well as its valuation multiples. I’ve read individual posts and analyses and looked at the company’s reports, but even with the “easiest to interpret” companies, crunching the numbers is challenging and has gone wrong so often that I don’t post them publicly anymore.  I have, of course, seen figures and valuation multiples from many sources, but I can’t form a precise enough understanding of them in relation to peers and growth prospects, etc.  Indeed, if someone has the time to share their thoughts on the company’s figures regarding this firm, it would probably be a pleasure for many others, not just me.
