Diamyd Medical is active in diabetes research. The company has developed a vaccine that contains the active ingredient and molecule GAD, a substance that has the potential to be an important part of the prevention of diabetes treatments in the future. The negative reaction back then was likely also related to the fact that there was no plan for the next move. It was simply stated that Ulf was drawing up a list of different options. Anders is unlikely to remain CEO for long, given his respectable age. Well, at least the Umeå plant now has a GMP certificate; surely this has some value/benefit. We’ll have to see what happens next—whether they take on a new drug candidate, an acquisition, or something else.

Whew, should I still be burning money on diabetes and biotech? Maybe the opportunity needs to be investigated more thoroughly over time. Currently, Nextcell covers my risk tolerance. @Bimmer This was not well received. Anders is a veteran and the father of the company, but his role is surely temporary. Is Anders packaging the company for sale as a service laboratory, or is he just acting as an interim CEO after Ulf’s sudden departure? Anders did step aside previously due to health issues. I haven’t followed the outfit since the results. Is there any hope for the future other than as a service provider for other companies? There is a reasonable amount of cash in the coffers but no business operations, and continuing the old drug pipelines seems like a pretty desperate endeavor. Things might only progress through an acquisition, perhaps by using the cash reserves to buy out an early-stage company to be developed in-house. Since they do have the lab space.

Ulf stepped down from the CEO role after ten years. He was replaced by Diamyd founder, chairman of the board, and former CEO, Anders Essen-Möller. Anders is already a respectable 85 years old and founded Diamyd when his daughter fell ill with type 1 diabetes. To all you investors who believed in diabetes treatment drugs and lost your money in Diamyd, I recommend turning your gaze to a company called Nektar - $NKTR. They have a very interesting diabetes trial underway with a drug that targets Tregs, aiming to restore the body’s own immune regulation to balance. The drug has already shown very promising signs in phase 2b trials for other autoimmune diseases such as Atopic Dermatitis and Alopecia. Although the market cap is higher than Diamyd’s was when people were betting on it, the potential market size for Nektar is significantly larger.

There’s no point in selling in this bankruptcy. It still amazes me how the difference can be so radical compared to previous data that it’s not even worth continuing the study to the end. The probability that previous positive results were just a coincidence is quite small, isn’t it?

Good to know, the expenses stop running and they can do the trial’s autopsy. I’ll hold the earthly remains of the position out of academic interest.
