Faron is a global, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, focused on tackling cancers via novel immunotherapies. The Company's lead asset is bexmarilimab, a novel anti-Clever-1 humanized antibody, with the potential to remove immunosuppression of cancers through reprogramming myeloid cell function. I don’t know if biotech investing is particularly popular in Finland, but it feels like for the average person, it’s the same as playing the lottery. Big wins are possible, but statistically, there are probably more misses. Even Faron’s number of shareholders is so large that it’s hard to believe everyone is fully aware of the details of drug development. This story is certainly interesting to follow, but taking a position is outside my comfort zone. Hopefully, everything goes well.

Welcome back. I don’t know about others, but I have a long list of companies that I know well but can only follow because they don’t yet meet the criteria I require for an investment. Price is, of course, an essential part of this. I have time to wait, and I can’t invest in everything I want anyway. It’s nice to comment here because there is a lot of discussion.  This is, by the way, a good reason why biotech tends to be overvalued. People want to be “part of a good cause.” But since we are on an investment forum, it is perfectly justified to demand a return on invested capital.

Like Maitopoika, I also made my first Faron investment at a rather expensive price perhaps five years ago. I believed that the company’s results and stock price increases could be rapid. Now I have learned lessons from both Faron and other drug development companies I have compared it to over the years. Faron is not very different. Investor enthusiasm is high at the beginning and awakens again with new results or achievements. These companies need funding for years, and someone unfamiliar with the industry will likely be disappointed many times over the coming years. Eventually, those results come at some point, and if the company succeeds, the remaining owners are rewarded. Some have joined in the final stages at a low price. Some have been involved the whole way. Some have actively capitalized on the ups and downs of interim results and funding rounds. In Faron’s case, my intention is to understand the results to a reasonable extent and remain an investor because getting to the decisive results will take less time than the time I’ve already been involved. My view is that the company will succeed and the owners will be rewarded for it. I have now applied the lessons I’ve learned to Herantis Pharma, where I am involved with a small “starter position” to maintain my interest in following the company’s results. Later, the intention is to draw new conclusions. In Faron’s case, many of us have paid for the “lesson” received; Faron, like other similar companies, offers this. In addition to the lesson learned, I also keep the “finish line” in mind. The finish line is closer ahead than it is behind. The competitors are also behind.

Personally, I exited my position before the current valuation hit rock bottom for the same reason that has even been noted in court. The company paints an overly optimistic picture of its research and situation, and uses all its communication to convince investors of massive success. However, whenever the time comes to deliver on those promises, some random external factor inevitably appears, pushing the schedule back by years and justifying the need to bleed more money from investors. The explanations follow the same pattern, and the same Ponzi-like phrases are repeated every single time. I kept up with this for 5 years, and during the last year, I repeatedly found myself thinking that nothing is as certain as the fact that Faron will always let you down. I haven’t had any trust in the CEO for a long time, and the old investor adage about avoiding family-run companies seems very applicable in Faron’s case. I find it absolutely absurd how there is once again the same kind of mass fervor as there was during last summer and autumn. Critics are insulted, their motives are questioned, posts are flagged, and people are practically speaking in tongues in their zeal. Rarely does an investment case have as many red flags as Faron—in every round, the loudest voices belong to the bottom-tier participants who just joined. Of course, I hope that the research will one day lead to a finished drug, but I consider that fairly unlikely. So, the answer to your question is: the company management is not worthy of my trust. I wouldn’t buy a used car from Jalkanen, whose credibility sits somewhere between a shady car shark and a Rinta-Jouppi salesman.

Returning to the facts after all the baseless bashing, just to refresh our memories and recap everything—tell us, you naysayers, based on facts, what those disappointments actually were.

Objective analysis is always welcome. Usually, that is when you find both positives and negatives in the subject matter, not just one or the other. Those are the kinds of posts I also read and reflect on carefully, and I am also able to change my own view based on the facts I read. Pure negativity or positivity isn’t very convincing, whether the claims are justified or not. Nothing is black and white, and if you only see one color, the thinking process has been left unfinished.
