Elisa is active in the telecom industry. The company offers services within communication with a focus on solutions that involve fixed telephony, mobile, and internet services. The customers are found among private individuals, corporate customers, and public organizations. The largest activity is in the Finnish and Baltic markets. In addition to the main business, the company also offers various digitization services, mainly to its larger corporate customers.

Telia was likely able to include specific terms in the acquisition agreement. However, those in the DNA camp are certainly waiting with bated breath to see what kind of deal is reached with Elisa. Reading the news, I got the impression that MTV chose Elisa as their first target to try and secure a deal. If the outcome is favorable for them, there is over a 90% certainty that they will terminate DNA’s contract next. It’s not worth terminating all contracts at the same time, as viewership would drop, and advertising revenue along with it. When MTV was asked about agreements with others, they stated that the negotiations concern Elisa and declined to comment on others. If DNA were paying MTV anything at the moment, MTV would ruthlessly use it as leverage in the media: “We want to make the same deal with Elisa as we have with DNA. They are paying for this, so why shouldn’t Elisa have to pay?”

Negotiations for a new agreement have been ongoing for months, but a mutual understanding has not been reached. A new agreement requires the approval of both parties. Negotiations are still ongoing. The current agreements between MTV and Elisa were made several years ago."

MTV has apparently specifically terminated the agreement with Elisa in the middle of the contract period.

I watched the discussion between the parties, and MTV’s argument is based on Elisa’s strong profitability… so, would it be that if Elisa were also a poorly managed, loss-making mess like MTV—which has been in the red forever—there wouldn’t be a problem? MTV has some truly great logic there…

Schibsted (MTV3) is trying to cash in quite brazenly here. The same thing happened when Tori.fi moved to their ownership a few years ago. Back then, the middleman’s cut of the used goods trade grew quite significantly.

Nothing has probably been made public about these agreements, and it’s unlikely they ever will be. Most likely they have different contract periods, and the same extortion will probably happen to DNA and Telia later when their contract periods normally expire. Personally, I don’t understand MTV’s (Maikkari) interpretation at all—that Elisa should pay something for those MTV channels. If MTV pays Digita for channel distribution in the terrestrial network (Antenna TV), by what logic should it be the other way around in the cable network, where the distributor pays for them? Maintaining a cable network isn’t free for Elisa, just as maintaining the terrestrial network isn’t free for Digita. If you open that door and start paying channel owners, then Elisa will end up paying Disney (Star and National Geographic) and other channels too. And that would only mean that Elisa’s cable TV fees would go up. So, Elisa’s customers should definitely hope that MTV loses this one, because the customers are the ones who would ultimately pay for it. In my opinion, Elisa is in a pretty strong position here, and I hope MTV’s new Norwegian owner, Schibsted, gets a bloody nose over this. They are the ones who will suffer the most the longer this continues, as advertisers are unlikely to pay as much for ads if 1/3 of the viewers disappear.

Probably because under the current model, MTV generates losses year after year, and the company is feverishly looking for ways to change the situation. Both parties are playing a high-stakes game. One stands to lose a bunch of cable customers if agreements with competitors have been reached. On the other hand, the entities that have paid for advertising slots are unlikely to be cheering about the situation either.
