Glesys streamlines backbone with Smartoptics IP-over-DWDM solution
Oslo, Norway - December 16, 2025 - Smartoptics, a leading provider of optical networking solutions, today announced that Glesys, a Swedish cloud and data center operator, has streamlined its backbone network with IP over DWDM. The Smartoptics open line system introduces a cleaner architecture that supports the next wave of coherent technologies. The cost-efficient and easy-to-use network enables lean operations and competitive services.
Glesys delivers cloud, VPS and colocation services from ISO-certified data centers in Sweden and Finland. Its cross-border backbone is built and operated in-house, supporting customers in more than 60 countries. To accommodate fast traffic growth, meet new optical requirements and simplify daily operations, Glesys now runs IP over DWDM with Smartoptics. The deployment was supported by Smartoptics' partner Conscia. The open line system and 400ZR+ optics enable a clean transport layer with higher capacity and lower complexity.
"Our network exists to support hosting services, and we put exceptional weight on operational simplicity," says Eric Löwgren, Head of Network, Glesys. "Traditional optical systems are often built for service provider environments, not for data center operators running lean teams. Smartoptics stands out by focusing on the regional and metro use cases that match our needs. Their platform is a breath of fresh air and as easy to run as a passive mux. We expect Smartoptics to be a key supplier for a long time."
IP over DWDM is widely adopted to simplify transport layers and make better use of coherent optics. Compared to older transceivers, these pluggables introduce tighter performance expectations for signal quality and path consistency. This requires consistent optical performance across spans, which is enabled by open line systems
"Coherent pluggables change the expectations for the optical layer, opening the door to rethinking designs and removing unnecessary steps. In networks like Glesys', IP over DWDM with open line systems is a natural fit because it keeps the design efficient and lets coherent optics perform at their full potential. We are proud to support their continued growth with solutions that fit both their footprint and their way of working," says Magnus Grenfeldt, CEO, Smartoptics.
