GRANGEX to Host Arendal Week seminar on the strategic role of Sydvaranger

GRANGEX AB (publ) (“Grangex” or the “Company”) will host a seminar during Arendalsuka on August 12, bringing together representatives from politics, industry and the local community to discuss what is needed to restart the Sydvaranger mine and the wider significance of the project for Eastern Finnmark and Norway. Welcome to join GRANGEX seminar in Arendal on Wednesday, August 12 2026, at 14:00–14:45, Symposium, Langbryggen 7 or on webcast https://vimeo.com/event/6108755/ac6f9a2e82

The planned restart of Sydvaranger is drawing closer. Much of the groundwork is in place, but several critical steps remain, including securing the remaining financing required to bring the mine back into operation.

A reopened Sydvaranger would create jobs and local economic activity in Eastern Finnmark. In a region of growing geopolitical importance, increased industrial activity could also contribute to long-term settlement, resilience and a stronger Norwegian presence in the north.

Sydvaranger also has a potential role to play beyond the region. The mine is being developed to produce an ultra-high-grade magnetite concentrate suitable for direct reduction-based steelmaking. Reopening the mine could therefore strengthen Norway’s position as a supplier of strategic raw materials to European industry at a time when secure and responsible access to these materials is becoming increasingly important.

The seminar will address the remaining barriers to restarting Sydvaranger, including the challenges of financing capital-intensive mining projects and whether, and in what form, the Norwegian government should contribute to securing the project’s realisation.

Christer Lindqvist, Chief Executive Officer of Grangex, states:

“Restarting Sydvaranger is not only about bringing a mine back into production. It is also about creating long-term industrial activity and jobs in Eastern Finnmark, strengthening Norway’s presence in a strategically and geopolitically important region, and contributing a high-quality raw material to Europe’s future green steel industry. During the seminar, we will discuss the remaining steps needed to turn these plans into reality.”

Highlights of the seminar include:

  • The wider societal value of reopening Sydvaranger
  • Jobs, local economic impact and new opportunities for Eastern Finnmark
  • Sydvaranger’s potential contribution to long-term settlement and resilience in the region
  • Norway’s role as a supplier of strategic raw materials to Europe
  • The potential role of the Norwegian government in financing the restart
  • Balancing societal benefits with public and private financial risk
  • The actions required from government, authorities and industry to bring the project into operation
  • The challenges of securing market financing for capital-intensive mining projects
