Humana's climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative

Humana

Humana AB has set climate targets in line with the Paris Agreement's ambition to limit global warming to 1.5°C. The targets have now been reviewed and formally validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Humana has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire value chain. The approval from SBTi includes both a near-term target for the year 2030 and a long-term target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, at the latest.

"Having our climate targets validated by an independent and leading organization like SBTi is an important milestone for Humana. Our mission is to give people a good life, and that includes a responsibility to contribute to a safe and sustainable future for everyone. The climate issue is one of the greatest and most urgent challenges of our time, and our commitment shows that we are determined to do our part," says Nathalie Boulas Nilsson, President and CEO of Humana.

Humana's approved climate targets entail:
Near-term targets to 2030: Humana commits to reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42 percent, with 2024 as the base year. Humana also commits that, within Scope 3, 67% of the company's suppliers by emissions will have set their own science-based targets, and that absolute emissions from commuting, business travel, and fuel- and energy-related activities will have been reduced by 30.8 percent.
Science-based net-zero-target to 2050: Humana commits to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain, with 2024 as the base year.

To reach the targets, Humana will accelerate its climate work. Focus areas initially include a continued transition to renewable energy in properties, reduced emissions from the vehicle fleet and from travel, as well as increased sustainability requirements in procurement and closer collaboration with suppliers. Direct emissions reductions (decarbonization) will be prioritized and all residual emissions will be neutralized (if applicable) in line with SBTi criteria before reaching net-zero emissions.

About the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global corporate climate action organization enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement goals and the latest climate science. The aim is to accelerate companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.The SBTi is incorporated as a charity. Its partners are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
