Orthex Corporation, Press release, 20 October 2026 at 10.00 a.m. EEST

Orthex has tested its SmartStore™ Easy food storage containers for the migration of microplastics. In an independent laboratory test simulating the intended use of the products, no microplastic particles were detected in the water used as a food simulant after the test.

Microplastics are an important environmental topic for Orthex and its stakeholders. Testing food storage containers for microplastics forms part of Orthex's broader quality control and environmental work. The company regularly tests its products in independent laboratories and through product use tests.

The latest test was carried out on 1.2-litre SmartStore™ Easy food storage containers. Six samples were submitted for testing, and the analysis focused on the migration of microplastics.

Test designed to simulate the intended use of the containers

In this test, samples were filled with distilled water and kept in contact with it for 10 days at 40°C. The containers and the water were then heated in a microwave oven for two minutes at 600 W.

The analysis covered particles ranging in size from 5 µm to 5 mm. According to the results, no microplastic particles were detected in the food simulant. Testing was performed by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited external service provider.

"Product safety, durability and functionality are fundamental requirements for our products. Microplastics are an issue that understandably raises questions among consumers, which is why we want to provide information based on independent testing. The result gives us valuable information on how SmartStore™ Easy food storage containers perform under the tested conditions," says Hanna Kukkonen, Chief Marketing and Sustainability Officer at Orthex.

Durable products designed for repeated use

SmartStore™ Easy food storage containers are made of polypropylene. Orthex emphasises the importance of using products according to their intended purpose. Symbols on Orthex products provide information about their use and properties, including whether they are suitable for dishwashing and microwave heating.

Increasing the use of recycled and renewable raw materials is also part of Orthex's environmental work. The company has set a target of increasing the share of recycled and renewable raw materials to 80% by 2035. In 2025, their share was 17.9%.
