NKT inaugurates expanded power cable factory in Portugal

NKTPress release2026-10-21 07:00

NKT has completed the investment to expand its power cable production in Esposende, Portugal. The expanded facility strengthens NKT's capacity and capabilities for medium- and high-voltage power cables, supporting the robust demand for power cable systems driven by the energy transition. NKT has welcomed more than 150 new colleagues to the site as a result of this factory expansion. The expanded factory will now enter a ramp-up phase, with the new capacity and capabilities gradually becoming operational over the coming months.

On 20 October, NKT marked the completion of its investment to expand its medium- and high-voltage power cable production in Esposende, Portugal, with an inauguration event and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The expanded facility strengthens NKT's capacity and capabilities to support robust demand for power cable systems driven by the energy transition. As part of the factory expansion, NKT has welcomed more than 150 new colleagues to the site.

The milestone comes approximately two years after NKT acquired Portuguese power cable manufacturer SolidAl in June 2024.

"The progress we have made through this investment marks an important milestone for NKT and for our colleagues in Esposende. In just over two years, we have moved from acquiring SolidAl to integrating and significantly expanding the site. The new capacity and capabilities strengthen our ability to support our customers as they expand and modernise their power grids, while establishing Esposende as an important part of NKT's European manufacturing footprint. We are proud to continue investing in the site, its people and our operations in Portugal," says Carlos Fernandez, Executive Vice President, Head of Distribution in NKT.

The transformation of the site builds on the experience and capabilities already established in Esposende and has been delivered through close collaboration between colleagues at the site and across NKT. With the investment completed, the focus now turns to ramping up the new capacity and capabilities to realise the full potential of the expanded factory.

Strengthening power cable production to support Europe's energy transition

Since the acquisition, the Esposende organisation has been integrated into NKT while the investment has expanded and upgraded the factory. The investment includes new production lines and equipment, new CCV capabilities and enhanced testing facilities, significantly strengthening the capacity and capabilities of the site.

"NKT's decision takes on particular significance in the current European energy context. The electrification of the economy, the growth of renewable energy, electric mobility and the transformation of industry require more modern, more resilient and smarter electricity grids. Producing clean energy is not enough. It must be transmitted safely, distributed efficiently and delivered to households, businesses and our communities. Power cables are therefore essential infrastructure, critical to the energy transition. This expansion is good news for Esposende, good news for Portugal and good news for Europe," says Dr. João Esteves, Secretary of State for the Environment.
