Novo Nordisk is a producer of insulin for diabetes treatment. In addition to the specialist expertise in diabetes, the company produces drugs for hormone treatment as well as for hemophilia and bleeding disorders. The products are found on a global market and are sold under separate brands. Novo Nordisk was founded in 1923 and is headquartered in Bagsværd, Denmark.

I couldn’t quickly find a general pharmaceutical company discussion, so I’ll post this CNBC news about how Europe has lost/is losing its leading position as a developer and manufacturer of medicines: European pharma jeopardized by Trump policies, China’s biotech boom  For decades, Europe was the world’s undisputed laboratory. In 1990, nearly half of global research and development took place in Europe, and about a third in the U.S., according to research by ING. Today, the U.S. share of R&D has jumped to 55%, while Europe’s has plummeted to 26%. For decades, companies have lamented Europe’s fragmented capital markets, single-market adoption on pricing and clinical trials, and uneven reimbursement policies.

Monthly prices are indeed falling sharply. Is this a bit of a race-to-the-bottom for them?

Amazon Pharmacy begins delivering Lilly’s new weight loss drug, Foundayo, with same-day delivery available in some cases. The story mentions that the news caused competitors’ stock prices, such as Novo’s, to drop… a whopping -0.83 percent. Amazon is offering the drug at a low price and expanding fast home delivery to thousands of cities, which is expected to intensify competition.  Amazon Pharmacy said customers with valid prescriptions can order Foundayo, a once-daily oral treatment for adults with obesity or overweight with weight-related medical problems, and receive fast medication delivery directly to their homes nationwide. The Copenhagen stock exchange is closed today, though… Trump’s protectionism and the declared unpopularity directed at Denmark are still threats. The next two interim reports will probably show Novo’s longer-term direction. Let’s hope for the best..

Novo’s stock couldn’t react to this anymore. Of course, the approval was expected. I’m starting to lean towards buying Novo. All the failures are already priced in. Wegovy tablets are doing well, sales have grown faster than expected. However, I’m not adding this to my portfolio right now; I prefer to research biotech and technology stocks.

The FDA has approved Lilly’s new weight-loss pill, Foundayon, which is taken once a day without any dietary restrictions. It will go on sale this April and, of course, it will tighten the competition with Novo. As has been reiterated, a tablet makes it easier to use, although injectable drugs are still more effective for weight loss according to studies.  Eli Lilly stock (LLY) popped by more than 5% on Wednesday after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the company’s new weight-loss pill that Eli Lilly says can be taken “any time of day without food or water restrictions.” The approval sets up a new phase of competition between Eli Lilly and its main competitor, Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk (NVO), in the weight-loss drug space.
