Olvi is a Finnish brewery. The brewery produces a variety of beverages such as beer, cider, soft drinks, mineral water and energy drinks. Production takes place in Finland and the largest market is found in the Nordic and Baltic markets, where the operations are managed based on the group's subsidiaries, each with its own business focus. The company was originally founded in 1878 and has its headquarters in Iisalmi.

“Manufacturing” soft drinks at a factory doesn’t require massive equipment compared to, say, beer or milk. If I recall correctly, the concentrate and water are mixed and carbonation is added in a single machine before the bottling line. So it is certainly possible that Olvi now has enough logistics space and loading capacity for a major brand. The concentrate would then be the major brand’s proprietary product, delivered by tanker truck. Time will tell…

Well, Muumit (Moomins) and Smurffit (Smurfs) come to mind first, which are also found in S-Group. Olvi Cola has been missing, and at least in some Prismas, Kane’s have completely disappeared from the selection. What’s left is… nothing. Last year’s promotional campaign for Jolly Cola did manage to spread widely, and the newly launched Juju series seems to have comprehensive distribution. But even just Laitila and Nokian Panimo have beaten Olvi 10-0 in the soda category at S-Group stores.

Incredibly weak? I don’t understand what is so incomprehensible about strong international brands taking most of the market. For example, what soft drinks does Koff have if you don’t count the Coca-Cola Company’s products? Exactly. In my opinion, it is exactly the right move to start renewing the soft drink brand and start challenging those big giants locally. Olvi can achieve a completely different level of gross margins with those than Koff/Hartwall, as they own the brands themselves. When a company emphasizes a growth strategy for non-alcoholic products, it must also be executed. Good job, Olvi! My holding is very small.

Sinebrychoff will end the production and distribution of Coca-Cola in Finland by the end of 2028. Coca-Cola Finland’s communications manager Thea Natri tells IS that the company is not currently commenting on which party the production and distribution will be transferred to.  I bet it will eventually end up with Pepsi going to Koff and Coke to Hartwall. It’s somehow hard to see Olvi having the capacity for such a large production, especially since they’re already struggling with production in Denmark anyway.

On the other hand, the share of cans in soft drinks has also grown and could be increased even further. Especially since it’s just a fact that, for example, Coca-Cola tastes better from a can than from a plastic bottle. Olvi is indeed an inexplicably weak player in the soft drinks sector. And I don’t really understand that recent soft drink launch either, which shares a product name with a Finnish Putinist rapper. Since they have the Danish Jolly in their portfolio, it would have seemed much smarter to launch that brand in Finland. Or well, Jolly Cola was recently on sale in Finland, but it ended up being nothing more than a promotional batch.

Olvi still has, after all, quite limited plastic bottle capacity unless they have purchased more machines. As I understand it, Olvi has better efficiency, at least in its canning lines, compared to competitors, and utilization rates have been very high thanks to good preventive maintenance and fast product changeovers; however, there is likely no extra capacity there either without adding more shifts. But the canning speed is very high as long as there is space to store the products. If I remember correctly, they can reach a maximum speed of 150,000 cans per hour across two lines. True. Producing private label is, of course, a slightly different matter.  There are many years here to tune operations into even more efficient shape, if it comes to that. But either way, this is a good reminder of the importance of a beverage factory owning the brands it produces. In that respect, Olvi is certainly in a good position regarding its own drinks.
