OSLO, NORWAY - 4 April 2022 - With reference to Zwipe’s announcement on 15 December 2021, biometric fintech pioneer Zwipe can confirm that TSYS, a leading global provider of payment services to card issuers (and part of Global Payments Inc, a member of the S&P 500), chose to work with Zwipe to bring biometric payment cards into the North American market and beyond. This follows today’s release of TSYS’s feature article on the partnership with Zwipe and their intentions with biometric payment cards. With TSYS’ card production expertise - the company produced approximately 100 million cards of all types in the United States during 2021 - and existing production facilities, Zwipe’s single-chip functionality would be seamless to integrate into the TSYS card production process. In a recent North American market study, a staggering 91% of those surveyed said they want a card that is tied to their fingerprint. And 79% of the respondents said they would be willing to participate in a biometric card pilot program. This brings to mind the evolution of the CD, the MiniDisc, which was supposed to be the future. In reality, we were already using MP3 players and fully digital formats, and all physical disc playback felt incredibly clunky. As in this case, some only gave up their CDs after a long rebellion.

I admit I haven’t used mobile payments at the checkout (the one time I tried, it failed), and I don’t really want to give Google my card and purchase information when there are alternatives. I also try to avoid over-centralizing my services with Google.  I don’t doubt that the services you mentioned might be faster than paying with a card, where contactless payment might take about 5 seconds. I think that payment transaction confirmation could happen through the customer’s phone instead of the store’s connections, and because of this, it could be much faster. I still believe that cards will not be completely replaced by the alternatives you mentioned or any others very soon. I recall that the majority of people in surveys have expressed their willingness to even pay for the option of biometric identification in payment transactions instead of a PIN. So I believe this is just a step forward in card payments. Perhaps someday we will indeed get rid of cards, but I don’t believe that will happen in the very near future, and Zwipe will have plenty of time to profit, and shareholders along with it. I hardly use MobilePay once a month.  Erik Selin wouldn’t have invested NOK 104 million last autumn at an average price of NOK 26.10 unless he believed in Zwipe.

I have to comment on this. A card definitely doesn’t beat Apple and Google Pay in speed. I don’t know you, and I don’t know how well you handle mobile payments. Mobile Pay is a much worse mobile payment experience than Apple or Google Pay, so there, the card probably wins. I hope you have actually tried what mobile payment is like at its best, if you also use your own experiences in investment decisions. Personal experiences are by no means a bad thing, but in that case, you have to compare it to the best experience. My stance on this case is that it will remain a niche product, especially if the consumer has to pay something extra for it.

I was at the checkout in January, and a man about 50 years old started complaining because he couldn’t find the loyalty app, which he had, of course, also logged out of. He complained, perhaps tired and maybe even hot in his winter coat, asking why they couldn’t just have plastic cards like before, saying it was better. I don’t admit to being this man  I just told him to forget the whole thing.  The cashier, helpfully, said she could log him in with his phone number. If +50-year-olds are like this, then biometric bank and credit cards, as well as identification cards (Access), could have a good future for at least the next 20 years. In Africa, the average age is much younger, and there might also be other reasons for the popularity of mobile payments in many places.  About two years ago, I read an article about mobile payments and was at least somewhat convinced of their great popularity in the future, perhaps especially in China and Africa. Well, even though MobilePay is handy if you don’t happen to have cash and in general, I somehow still believe in the card more for the future.
