Iceflake Studios, which took over development responsibility for Cities: Skylines II from Colossal Order, released its first update for the game yesterday. Many small changes that likely have little financial significance on their own, but the update’s reception among players has been positive. IS seems to understand what needs fixing in the game to improve player satisfaction. A couple more similar updates, and this could provide a boost to future DLC sales and the game’s longevity. Well, looking on the bright side, since Paradox doesn’t provide guidance, they don’t have to issue profit warnings either.

We’ll keep that in mind! There was actually some direct hinting about the matter in the press release.  It would strengthen the company’s position on the capital markets and provide more options for us, says Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox.  For example, Kempower moved to the main list in the summer of 2024, after announcing its plan to move to the main list from the notorious First North “dump” in late April 2024. A listing prospectus must be prepared at least in Finland, and presumably in Sweden as well, which takes a fair amount of time, but they are quite solid documents for investors to wade through. The move naturally doesn’t change the business fundamentals. Continuing with Kempower as an example, the company issued a negative profit warning a month after moving to the main list, and the share price plummeted well below the level at which it moved to the main list.

Wait a moment, an announcement from Paradox about applying for the main list. In a normal situation, this wouldn’t cause any kind of reaction in me, but in the last webcast, management was asked when they would start buying back their own shares. To this, the CEO and CFO stated that there are bureaucratic challenges in executing share buybacks on First North (I cannot comment on the truthfulness of this). After this, it was said that own shares could be acquired once they eventually move to the main list. I completely agree with Verneri. If we start from the idea that AI will start producing an ever-increasing share of consumed media, I believe Paradox’s moat is specifically tied to credible complexity. Paradox’s games, such as EU or Stellaris, are not just content, but networks of interacting systems (Thanks ChatGPT for this sentence :D). Their value doesn’t arise from a single story, dialogue, or visual asset, but from the fact that thousands of small rules form a credible simulation. I don’t believe that AI can hold such a large context in its grasp, and even if it could, the price tag would certainly be hefty and involve continuous billing  If we consider that AI might actually disrupt the gaming industry (and I emphasize the word consider), I believe the pressure will first fall on more linear experiences like Call of Duty-style games, where much of the value comes from production value, scripted scenes, and audiovisual spectacle, and the whole thing is wrapped together with a plot lifted from the latest Michael Bay movie. In these, AI can certainly close the gap realistically and quickly. And I am absolutely sure that the gaming industry will also be filled with AI slop over time, but at what point will consumers be ready to pay for it?

Of course they don’t.  I’m not a game developer, but as I understand it, Paradox games are at the deep end of the gaming industry in terms of complexity. They are more like simulations than “games.” To top it off, the major games, with the exception of Stellaris and CS2, are based on history, which makes the use of generic AI in content… more complicated. Games are also developed for years before release. Yet, they are practically in beta at launch before years of DLCs and fixes.  Paradox’s DLC model allows for refining games to their peak over the years in a financially sensible way. That’s why I wouldn’t be primarily worried about AI disruption in games regarding Paradox, unless the entire player base shifts to lighter games. For example, @Farseer raised this concern well based on their own experiences. It’s possible that the learning curve for Paradox games is becoming too high for many. On the other hand, that makes the games more rewarding when they offer challenges and insights… And shouldn’t the same AI concern perhaps be visible first in the giant of the strategy space, i.e., the Civilization game series? That’s where there is the most meat for challengers to go after.

The night seems darkest after sunset. The same metaphor can be applied to Paradox, which will see declining revenue over the next few quarters before the release of new games. But those game releases will come, in time. Share price around 117 SEK. It’s probably unnecessary to say that in terms of valuation multiples, we are on the historically cheap side. But what do any valuation multiples matter when in five years there will be 20 Paradox clones making a new EU V every month. Insiders are still buying
