Peab has been commissioned to build a new sailing collision shield in the Göta River to protect the new peninsula at Masthugg Dock in central Gothenburg. The customer is the City of Gothenburg and the contract is worth SEK 125 million.
The work goes under the framework of the existing partnering contract with Gothenburg City's Development Department. The new sailing collision shield is a safety measure in developing the new peninsula at Masthugg Dock. The shield will prevent ships in the Göta River from colliding with the peninsula and ensure that the development of the future city district is long lasting and robust.
"Peab has worked really well together with the city and we're happy to be able to continue to work on Masthugg Dock. This is a technically interesting project that will be an important piece of the puzzle in the area's development," says Victoria Borgljung, Deputy Region Manager at Peab.
The sailing collision shield will consist of two large concrete caissons that will be towed to the site and sunk by filling them with river water. They will rest on about 80 wooden piles and be locked in place with tubular steel piles.
Masthugg Dock is one of Gothenburg's largest ongoing urban development projects. The area will be a greener, vibrant district closer to the waterfront with two new parks, aa larger quayside and new meeting places. The entire area is expected to be completed around 2031.
The project will be carried out as a turnkey contract in partnering. Construction will start in August 2026 and the plan is to turn over the project in the summer of 2028.
The project will be order registered in business area Civil Engineering in the second quarter 2026.
