Wihlborgs Fastigheter AB: Wihlborgs starts the transformation of the historic Malmö Börshus

Wihlborgs Fastigheter

Malmö Börshus (Börshuset 1) is more than just a historic building and a symbol for trade and commerce in the city - it is also a central location through which some 50,000 people pass daily. Now Wihlborgs is starting a transformation that, after an extensive renovation, will showcase its character and history and at the same time open it up to become a more dynamic city space.

Renovation of the facade and the interior are both starting in autumn 2023. The aim is to upgrade to a more modern and energy efficient standard, and to reinstate the original appearance of the Börshus, while also creating a more open and accessible meeting place for Malmö residents and visitors during the day and evening. Our aim is to create lively and dynamic spaces through a mix of offices, conference facilities and restaurants.

The building will have four entrances on different sides and a covered courtyard in the centre as the building's hub. One key puzzle piece in increasing accessibility is a proposed restaurant facing the canal. This will entail transforming the current back of the building, which faces the water, into a front. Other planned operations include offices and conferences.

The architect is Krook & Tjäder.

"Many people pass Malmö Börshus on a daily basis and the building really has the opportunity to become a gathering place. At the same time, the city centre is expanding toward Malmö Central Station as Nyhamnen is extended. We want the Börshus to remain an important symbol of Malmö's history and an attraction during the day and in the evening," says Andreas Ivarsson, Director of Projects & Development at Wihlborgs.

About Malmö Börshus

Construction started on Malmö Börshus in 1862. Originally, the building was intended as an exchange for grain trading, which had an important place in Malmö's economy at the time. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Malmö Börshus was also used for trading other goods, including cotton, coffee and sugar. The building played a key role in the city's economy for many years and was a symbol of the city's success. Since the 1980s, Malmö Börshus has been a central meeting place for Malmö's business community, with office space and, periodically, restaurant operations.

The major renovation that took place in the 80s was awarded the city planning award and several of the additions from that era have been identified as worthy of preservation in the building antiquities investigation on which today's development project is based.
