Fortum is active in the energy sector. In addition to the provision of electricity, a number of technical solutions are offered in heat optimization as well as apps that are used to keep track of energy consumption. The company also provides charging stations for electric cars. The largest activity is found around the Nordic market. The company was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in Espoo.

I’m doing a bit of promotion for a forum thread I opened today regarding Fortum’s North American peer companies. These peers might interest Fortum investors either for benchmarking/researching the industry’s international landscape or as actual investment targets. For now, it only includes a general industry overview, but company-specific content will be added in the future.

The article fails to mention that last year, Finland likely had the cheapest electricity in Western Europe. This means that the large percentage increases in electricity prices in the coming years will be smaller in absolute terms. However, the trend seems to be upward: “Finland’s wholesale price will be lower this year than last year, at 35 euros/MWh. However, the price would rise to 55 euros/MWh by 2030 and to 61 euros/MWh by 2035. FORTUM OYJ LEHDISTÖTIEDOTE 9.4.2026  Fortum ja kolme muuta eurooppalaista energiayhtiötä ovat                             Fortum and three other European energy companies have signed an agreement with the French company Framatome to develop entirely European nuclear fuel for VVER-type power plants, which includes Fortum’s Loviisa power plant. In addition to Fortum, the agreement involves ČEZ from the Czech Republic, MVM Paks from Hungary, and Slovenské Elektrárne from Slovakia. The aim of the cooperation is to diversify the companies’ fuel procurement and reduce Europe’s dependence on imported energy. Framatome’s nuclear fuel development project will proceed in stages. The first stage involves the basic design of the fuel, and the second stage includes the manufacturing and licensing of initial fuel assemblies for the Loviisa power plant. Potential regular fuel deliveries would take place in the early 2030s. The development project is based on a strong, 100% European design and supply chain, which includes Framatome’s fuel fabrication facilities in France and Germany. For Fortum, this cooperation initiated with Framatome is already the second project to diversify the fuel procurement for the Loviisa power plant. In November 2022, Fortum signed an agreement with Westinghouse Electric Company for the design, licensing, and delivery of a new Western fuel type for the Loviisa power plant. The first batch of Westinghouse-supplied fuel was loaded into Loviisa power plant’s reactor two during the 2024 annual outage. Last year, the deployment of the new fuel continued with additional Westinghouse fuel being loaded into unit two. There are 19 VVER-type reactors operating in European Union countries. Depending on the country, they produce 10–50 percent of the electricity in their operating countries. These plants are therefore very important for the security of supply of low-emission electricity in Europe.

This project is also slowly progressing. The project would make the data center the country’s largest single electricity consumer. And to Rauma, the next: “To Rauma, more specifically to the Lakari industrial area, a very large data center project is planned, which, if realized, would be one of the largest in the world. The project is progressing, and it is expected to strengthen the region’s economy and technological profile.”  Operator: The project is backed by energy company Fortum, which is guiding operators to the area.  It seems there is a demand for electricity. Fortunately, Fortum has over 8000 megawatts already permitted in reserve for when the need arises.

Fortum’s battery recycling project in Harjavalta is progressing, and the EU is sponsoring it with tens of millions of euros. The goal is to multiply recycling capacity and improve the availability of critical materials, thus reducing dependence on China. Fortum’s balance sheet is already over-capitalized and there are not many investment targets for now, so dividends will be abundant for the financial year 2023.
