Detection Technology is a global solution and service provider of X-ray detectors for medical, security and industrial applications. The company's solutions range from sensor components to optimized detector systems with microcircuits, electronics, mechanics, software and algorithms. The company has offices in Finland, India, China, France and the USA. Detection Technology was founded in 1991 and has its headquarters in Espoo.

Juha has written a new company report on DT.  We reiterate our Buy rating for Detection Technology with a target price of EUR 13.5. In our assessment, the upcoming Q4’25 report will still be weak, with revenue and profitability remaining under pressure, so 2025 will go down in DT’s history as a difficult journey. In 2026, however, the headwinds should ease, and we estimate that the double-digit growth already guided for Q1 will extend into H1 as well. At the same time, earnings will improve gradually. Despite negative forecast changes, we believe the stock’s valuation is very attractive, as light is already visible on the horizon. Quote from the report: Profitability rises with revenue With a gross margin of approximately 45-50%, revenue growth would flow through well to the bottom line, even considering the company’s constant battle with cost inflation and price erosion. In the big picture, we believe DT’s operating margin will return to the 10-15% range as headwinds ease, which implies significant earnings growth from current levels. Our 2026 forecast for the EBITA margin is 11.8% (prev. 12.0%), which we consider a realistic level as growth materializes. Our forecasts do not reach the company’s 15% target level in the coming years. Our biggest concern is the cutthroat price competition in China, which at worst could spread to the rest of the world and ruin the industry’s profitability. During the initial operational phase, the site will concentrate on the end-assembly and final testing of high-quality detector boards designed for security X-ray imaging. Our roadmap includes a swift scale-up to incorporate the assembly of TFT flat panel detectors, allowing us to respond to the varied requirements of India’s industrial and medical imaging sectors.”

DT already warned about component availability issues for the end of the year in connection with Q2. I don’t remember if it was specifically RAM memory, but in the big picture, it’s the same problem; data centers (indirectly AI) are absorbing all components, and large buyers are steamrolling the smaller ones. They have been solving the problem for a longer time, and the impact has not been particularly significant, as far as I understand, but sales on the Medical side are apparently lagging because of this. DT has increased its inventories during the year due to availability challenges, which is one reason why cash flow has been sluggish. As for costs, this is not a problem, as far as I understand; a more widespread price increase would be required there. I would assume there is nothing new negative here, but I need to find out if this has developed as expected or gotten even worse.

@Juha_Kinnunen (and everyone else too!) have you considered how the rise in RAM prices could affect DT? On the PC side, people are horrified as memory prices have tripled in a short time, and if this continues, it will probably affect other products (phones, etc.) in the form of a component shortage. Apparently, all memory and its manufacturing capacity are now being sucked into the AI and data center boom. The price probably wouldn’t be a problem for DT (a small part relative to the whole product?), but if components simply aren’t available, then there’s nothing to sell.

Key downside risks: Geopolitical risks related to China and the US, FX risks, increased competition, price pressure, M&A risks, the global security outlook, the global economic outlook, advances in imaging technology, quality risks and the availability of components. Key upside risks: A fast recovery in aviation security investments, addressable market expansion and new growth opportunities, market share gains, margin recovery, China economic stimulus measures and a public takeover. Estimate and valuation changes Looking at recent developments and considering company-specific measures taken, we estimate a 50% y/y EBIT recovery in 2026 after the 2025 slump, with further but less pronounced improvements in 2027 (10% y/y). Our base case, driven by 3% market growth, TFT panel expansion and Security investments, points to respective 2025-31 sales and EBIT CAGRs of 4.7% and 14.2% (an average margin of 11.9%), while price pressure in China is likely to limit further upside. Based on our upside/downside scenario analyses, we find slightly positive risk/reward, but we reiterate Hold with an unchanged DCF- and multiples-based fair value of EUR 11.7. To find significant upside, one would need to model ~7% medium-term annual growth, or a ~15% discount to peers, which we find difficult to justify.
