Taaleri operates in the financial sector. The company is a Nordic private equity fund company that focuses on renewable energy and other alternative investments. The company has two business segments: Equity Funds and Strategic Investments. With its capital funds, Taaleri creates, for example, wind and solar power, biofuels and real estate. The company was founded in 2007 and its head office is located in Helsinki, Finland.

Excellent observation. Apparently, the Chairman of the Board and the largest long-term owners (board members, etc.) have not been able to, shall we say, “force” managers to become shareholders through good or bad corporate culture? Well, the end result is probably just collecting dividends and/or selling shares at a discount. It’s a shame, as the company has been an exemplary entrepreneurial pioneer in its field.

Shall we work together on a presentation for next year’s AGM about the company’s demerger? If the current model doesn’t produce results, we could pursue the path Saul outlined for value creation through demerger. Garantia could become independent, etc. We could also contact the largest shareholders to some extent, in case they would support the proposal.

Once again, dark clouds are gathering over Taaler’s investment story. The bio-industry investment went bankrupt, which clearly illustrates how difficult it is to invest existing cash profitably. Significant write-downs have also been made to Taaler’s African real estate funds and other real estate funds. It remains to be seen whether the strategy will change and the free cash will be distributed to investors when the poor investment success becomes evident. The problems with wind power are also already known to everyone.

However, the indirect effects are larger. This will inevitably make fundraising for the Bio2 fund more difficult, which already had an uncertain outlook (1 fund had challenges and the market is challenging). In addition, the company has had a similar project in Canada for a relatively long time, and the probability of its realization will inevitably decrease now. At the same time, it’s good to remember that the value of the Bioindustry business in our papers is very marginal, and therefore this has no effect on the sum-of-parts.  We’ll see if another party continues to ramp up that plant now that liabilities are reset in bankruptcy, and through this, the expected return increases. From Finland’s perspective, it would, of course, be nice if a successor was found.

In addition to biotech investments, another branch of the green transition, wind power, has faced challenges, first in Sweden and now in Finland, where wind farms have applied for corporate restructuring due to low wholesale electricity prices. So, these investments in the green transition are not sure-fire cash cows.

Hopefully, the loss will remain small, but this case shows that bioindustry investments are not just a party, and such news reflects on valuation. As Taaleri has reduced profit distribution and increased investments made from its own balance sheet, it has raised Taaleri’s risk profile.
