Jussi Halme has made a pretty good video about Aspo.  When a nearly hundred-year-old listed company decides to split itself into two parts, investors should take note. Aspo is not just any diversified conglomerate – it is a company that has navigated through history, crises, and strategic turns, and now wants to tell a clearer story to the market. In this video, I delve into Aspo’s Q3 results, which may not have been headline-grabbing, but reveal something essential: the company is preparing to build two of its segments, Telko and ESL Shipping, into potentially independent listed companies. I go through Aspo’s third-quarter figures, assess the performance of the segments, and explain why this split could be exactly the right move – or why the market might never fully value it. What does this mean for investors? Is the conglomerate discount finally breaking? And what risks are associated with the separation?

It looks like the CEO is now scooping up shares a bit more aggressively.. ESL will probably be sold off soon and we’ll focus on Telko..

Aspo’s CEO has bought several batches of shares after the earnings release. Last week, after years, I also opened an Aspo position myself, as well as positions in Lassila & Tikanoja and Talenom. The reason is the companies’ probable future spin-off, which, based on my own statistics, has unlocked shareholder value in Finland in 95-100% of all cases and within a reasonable time after the spin-off. Often, the spin-off has also been front-run with a share price increase, once the spin-off has received a precise timetable and confirmation. These three shares are therefore primarily investments based on statistics and probabilities, and I group them into the same basket at bottom prices and with relatively moderate valuation multiples, rather than taking a stand on the general situation of the companies themselves. Kassu has made a new company report on Aspo after the Q3 earnings were out.  Aspo’s Q3 result was largely in line with expectations. However, the announced sale of ESL’s vessel during the quarter moderately lowered the shipping company’s capacity growth forecasts and also our earnings forecasts. On the earnings day, Aspo also announced its plans to either demerge or sell ESL by the end of 2026. Although our valuation of Aspo’s parts remains unchanged, we revised our target price to 6.8 euros (previously 6.5€), as the value-creating demerger in our calculations appears closer on the horizon than our previous estimate. We reiterate our ‘add’ recommendation, as we believe the markets do not yet fully price in the potential this offers. Aspo’s Q4 figures weren’t yet great, even if they improved a bit y/y, as ESL particularly had to endure some more demand softness. EBITA has however already bottomed out.
