Solidium needs to step in quickly as a 20% anchor owner so that foreigners don’t snatch up our Finnish national assets, at least not at the current bargain prices.

I personally thought that an opportunity to add to my position might come around or after the Q2 earnings release, when the market is “surprised” again by Q2 weakness, even though it has already been mentioned in advance.

The topic came up during the coffee break discussions at Marimekko’s Annual General Meeting, and Ihamuotila stated something along these lines: “there is no need to sell; we are doing very well as an independent company. Of course, if a good offer comes along, the board will convene to consider it.” As a small anecdote, I could mention that I expressed my disappointment that the Chairman of the Board wasn’t wearing any Marimekko at all, not even socks. Just about everyone from Marimekko was wearing the company’s products; the Jokapoika shirt, in particular, was quite popular even among those identifying as female. For conservative dressers (like Ihamuotila), Marimekko could launch a pocket square collection—that would slip very nicely into the breast pocket of a dark suit jacket  . I should probably send the suggestion forward. Speaking of conservatism, the analysts’ forecast changes after the strong Q1 results were also conservative; at least they dared to stick to the buy and add sides  . Revenue growth has come year after year, and earnings per share haven’t collapsed even from the “crazy years” of 2022-23, but are rather gradually on the rise. All this during years when consumer confidence is at a very low ebb. Well, sentiment affects analysts just as much as other market participants. M. Ihamuotila owns over 12% of Meko’s shares. At least so far, the company hasn’t been up for sale, even though interested parties have surely been knocking at the door. Personally, I consider the likelihood of this quite low, though not impossible.

But why? What could a foreign owner and management achieve that Finnish management couldn’t? I can’t quickly think of any particularly good reason for, say, a foreign private equity investor to take this over; plenty of threat scenarios, though. I do believe in the possibility, because when a strong brand isn’t generating enough business, the temptation to step in is certainly there.

Could it be that “I-want-it-all-now” growth companies should be sought from entirely different sectors? Marimekko is stockpiling intellectual property rights, the monetization of which will only happen on a larger scale once the time is ripe. Until then, we have to settle for this successful, slowly growing lifestyle company. Even now, Marimekko doesn’t really sell anything physical, but rather meanings attached to matter. People are already willing to pay for those. Quality is a necessary component, and positive brand imagery justifies the price level, but those are just supporting structures for the current situation. The real treasure and future financial success lie in those rights to iconic patterns and color combinations—the intellectual property. Marimekko will be bought out of the stock exchange for big money very soon—it will hardly take even one, two, or three decades.
