Tallink Grupp operates in the shipping industry. The company's main business consists of passenger transport and the provision of related services. In addition to its main business, Tallink Grupp also offers handling of large cargo transport for operators in various industries. Tallink operates in the Finnish, Baltic and Russian markets. The head office is located in Tallinn.

Tallink gave a nice semi-annual dividend, which on an annual basis is close to 10%. Now that consumer confidence is finally clearly on the rise, we can expect increasing passenger volumes and growth in the amount of money spent on board. Therefore, the dividend will remain the same next year and may even increase. Perhaps if the consumer confidence trend continues, the stock price will move closer to pre-pandemic levels.

Apparently, the main owner bought a nominal 1.7 million additional shares. It is interesting to follow this now that activity has increased.

It is a quite positive sign that the major shareholder is buying more during such a difficult market moment. Certainly, the company’s other holdings are performing well (mainly the gas business in the Baltics and Finland). It is possible that over some timeframe they may want to take Tallink private, as previously they have only bought at discount prices.

The Romantika is also back for the summer season, partly on the Tallinn-Stockholm route and partly for shorter cruises. They are saving costs to the extent that the Romantika will skip Mariehamn and the tax-free opportunity. (This might have been possible if fuel prices hadn’t risen). There has certainly been some complaining now that Tallink has no ship on the Paldiski-Kapellskär route, and there have been questions about whether this has caused issues with freight. Well, with this Romantika arrangement, at least a bit of freight can move between the Baltics and Sweden during the week. And didn’t the Romantika potentially go on charter to the Mediterranean at the turn of August/September? Also, what will be the ultimate fate of the Kapellskär-Paldiski route, and if a ship does come, how big will it be?

Riku-Matti Akkanen has written a piece on Tallink’s performance.   For investors, the overall picture is twofold but more stable than before. Tallink is not yet generating large profits, but the direction of the business looks better. Passengers are returning to the ships, losses are narrowing, and dividend payments have returned to the agenda. Swedbank lowered Tallink’s target price to EUR 0.55 from the previous EUR 0.60 and reiterated a neutral rating for the stock. According to Ollisaari, however, stable dividends mitigate the negative pressure on the target price, which supports the stock’s attractiveness in an uncertain market.
