Puuilo operates in the retail sector. The company operates and manages several stores and trading locations. I buy the justifications in the sense that Puuilo’s average purchase value is relatively small, so it’s not worth driving across town for if you can get it, perhaps slightly more expensively, from a competitor. It is precisely these customers that are captured through these store openings… I mean, I’ve acted this way many times myself

There’s no need to fear Sweden too much. It’s easy to highlight the failures of Finnish companies when they’ve expanded to our neighbor with overconfidence, but for example, Motonet entered Sweden with its own slightly refined concept, and the move has clearly been profitable. The first two stores opened in 2023, and five more were added last year. This sounds exactly like the kind of approach that Puuilo has also emphasized. In the worst-case scenario, Puuilo wastes a few million and comes back with its tail between its legs. In the best-case scenario, Sweden provides a growth path for over 10 years. As a shareholder, I am at least pleased that they are trying.

Sounds like exactly the right approach; not rushing in, but making calculated and low-risk moves. The hardware trade in Sweden isn’t so incredibly efficient that there wouldn’t be room for new concepts. Hopefully, Puuilo is still an entrepreneur-driven enough company so that economists, head office executives, and consultants don’t get the chance to ruin this.

Sounds like a smart way to operate. Learning from mistakes is wisdom, and learning from the mistakes of others is even cheap  Puuilo at least has a concept that works very well in Finland. It’s a shame I haven’t owned this since the IPO…

During the Q&A session of the earnings call, the CEO mentioned that they are looking for older properties in Sweden with short-term lease agreements. This is essentially a pilot project, and if it doesn’t gain traction, they can exit the Swedish market quickly.

Building a brand is naturally challenging and takes time, whether it’s in Sweden, Estonia, or Italy. In Finland, you hear these “Are you coming to get it? No. I’m coming.” ads on the radio all the time, whether you’re at the store or wherever. But it seems Puuilo’s brand awareness in Finland only really took off after the listing, so in a relatively short time. In 2018, there were 23 stores in total. The first store opened in Kajaani in 1998, and it seems the next ones didn’t follow until 2006 in Oulu, Kuopio, and Vantaa. It might work or it might not. This is a good time to test Sweden moderately while there’s still runway left in Finland, so there’s no need to search for growth at any cost in a state of panic. It has also been criticized in this thread that the aisles are full of sales items; even in Kajaani, they are building a new store next to the old one because you can’t move around with a cart amidst the abundance of goods. Still, the sales seem to be coming in, so the environment must appeal to consumers at least to some extent. Perhaps when the store floor and shelves feel like your own warehouse / garage / business premises, it feels cozy.
