Glaston is an industrial company that specializes in glass processing technology and services. The products include a wide range of solutions related to glass processing, such as lamination, tempering and bending, pre-processing and insulating glass solutions. In addition, the company offers related aftermarket services. The company operates worldwide. The head office is in Helsinki.

The first time happened with the goodwill impairment in 2012. Glaston Corporation recognizes impairment loss of goodwill and revises forecast - Glaston  The second occurred in 2014 PRESS RELEASE: Glaston strengthens its position in heat treatment and acquires the industrial property rights to all Glassrobots products - Glaston GLASSROBOTS had 10 kW/m² convection blowers to increase convection capacity. GLASTON convection blowers 13 kW/m². GLASTON even hired engineers from GLASSROBOTS. Gugliemo Macrelli was already calculating 5 kW/m² in Italy in 1995. That is sufficient. The maximum share value 15 years ago was over 30 euros. Back then, radiation heating was still in use. Now there has been a shift to convection heating. GLASTON was 15 years late to convection heating and also got it badly wrong with the FC series!  The latest shareholder register on GLASTON’s website is from December 31, 2021. Shareholders have sold their shares for over 8 million euros. OP Fin Small Cap, the Päivikki and Sakari Sohlberg Foundation, and a couple of others. As a counterbalance, Sinituote Oy has bought GLASTON shares for 2 + 2 million euros.  Then in the spring of 2025, a ”split” occurred. The major owners, Ahlström Capital Bv, Hymy Lahtinen Oy, LEMMINKÄINEN, and VARMA Pension Insurance Companies lost over 21 million euros in their ownership valuation! Must be nice to pay out capital returns with borrowed money! Glaston has signed a long-term financing agreement  - Gl aston. The major owners are not short of money. That is why the trading volume is minimal.

Radiation was used to heat so-called clear glass before the 1990s. Reflective glass took over the market in the 90s. They reflect radiation like a mirror. Convection heating was needed to heat the glass. This eventually led to the development that sparked the interest of the Chinese company www.landglass.net in my invention in the early 2000s. I offered it to Tamglass Engineering; later the name was changed to GLASTON. GLASTON developed a tempering machine in the early 2010s. The FC series was a fiasco, but it was sold to large glass companies based on Tamglass Engineering’s reputation. The FC series later evolved from a fiasco into a decent convection machine. I informed former GLASTON executives, including Dahlblom, of my invention. He was able to increase the sales of heat treatment machines, for example, through the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsDPuVSvtoA. Dahlblom was moved to other duties within the Ahlström Group. It had been temporarily removed from the latter link because it was too revealing. I have made two more inventions, making the FERACITAS technology perfect. A patent is being sought worldwide. See www.feracitas.fi / Flat Glass Tempering. The calculation takes into account that it consists of 50% clear glass and fully reflective glass. They still feature radiation and ”additional heaters”. Data disappeared from my computer’s memory back in late autumn 2025. At that time, I warned for the second time against Sinituote investing more money in GLASTON. Occasionally, I had saved backups to another hard drive.

@LASIHELMI1 You seem to know the industry well. Can you provide some insight into what would need to happen for Glaston’s performance to improve? After all, every year products and services worth around 200 million are sold to customers, so some kind of value is clearly being generated for certain parties even with current operations and products. Of course, from a shareholder’s perspective, it would be nice if more value were created in the future with even higher revenues and higher margins, so that some returns could be achieved. What would be the key to a turnaround?

I agree with JNALTU regarding the service business. It is narrowing as the Chinese sell tempering machines and HTBSs, likely with a over 95% probability. 1. GLASTON’S autopilot was developed for flat tempering, specifically for tempering glass of different sizes. It is simple heat control automation. And there is no AI in it. 2. Sales of traditional windshield bending machines make up the majority. Previously, there were HTBS sales as well. I don’t know what “GLASTON’S dominant quality segments” are. 3. Anders Dahlblom was elected to replace him in August 2020. 6. Dahlblom also achieved success in flat tempering. It still lacks radiation and “additional heaters”, which causes “unlimited” capacity. Pauli Reunamäki also developed HTBS. GLASTON failed with its convection heating furnace but sold many FC furnaces using arguments that gave a very false picture of the entire FC process. 8. Large companies settle their patent disputes in court. It is not an option for an individual inventor. Tamglass sued an English company for HTBS patent infringements. The company went bankrupt. It bought new equipment from North Glass. It flourished again. Tamglass sued North Glass regarding sales in Canada. North Glass received a business ban for a few years in Canada. Tamglass considered a business ban for North Glass in flat tempering because they positioned the convection tubes diagonally in the same way as the nozzle boxes were in their own patent application. A Chinese company had invented it earlier. It was different in its technical solution. GLASTON’S “market cycle” (stagnation) has already lasted for 20 years. This can be seen on Nordnet’s website. It was at its peak during the time of 7 comments.

I’ve been following the discussion for a few days, and the criticism from one user, “lasihelmi”, is technically colorful, but from an investor’s perspective, it overlooks a couple of key facts: The moat isn’t just hardware: While speculating on an individual patent is interesting, Glaston’s real competitive advantage today is its service network and installed base. About a third of revenue comes from this high-margin service business. This “moat” isn’t countered simply with a NorthGlass “photocopier”; it requires decades of global presence. Data and software vs. raw mechanics: The basic principles of glass tempering are old, but the game is now decided by automation and AI (such as Autopilot). If Glaston’s technology were truly completely obsolete or infringing on others’ patents, the company would not dominate the most demanding quality segments (like automotive glass and specialty work), where margins for error are non-existent. Patents and legal matters: Publicly listed companies are obligated to disclose significant patent disputes. If the claims shouted here regarding NorthGlass’s success relying on some private individual’s patents were true, the matter would be settled in court, not just on a forum. The company’s share price has been stagnating for a reason (market cycle), but “technological bankruptcy” is a claim quite far from what the company’s order books and market position indicate.

I wrote a letter to GLASTON’s then-CEO Pentti Yliheljo on March 15, 2004, which read: ”I am not writing this to get you to change your attitude. More so because this will become industrial history. Such stories are needed, both for better and for worse, so that Finland may prosper.” Examples included: 1.       Bending and tempering machine CBTS, which was a ”dud.” Its competitor was the BTF, which I invented. 2.       ProConvection, which was a ”dud.” 3.       http://www.langlass.net, which dominated the market for convection-based flat tempering machines for nearly 10 years until 2010. My invention. Land Glass made it better and cheaper. 4.       I offered patent FI 115045 and Chinese patent ZL.03 8 09546.7 to Tamglass. That’s what you get; GLASTON hasn’t made a single innovative invention in over 35 years.

Here is the company report from Aapeli following Glaston’s Q4 results.  Glaston’s operational figures were in line with our expectations in Q4, while order intake slightly exceeded our forecasts. The company’s order backlog was at a low level as expected, and the company expects the market situation to remain subdued. Reflecting this, the guidance indicating declining revenue and earnings met our expectations well, and as a result, forecast changes for the coming years remained moderate. However, we expect the company’s market situation to recover gradually as the current year progresses, and we forecast Glaston to return to growth starting next year. Against this backdrop, we also see the expected return, which relies on the stock’s long-term potential, as sufficiently attractive.
