In the video, Senior Analyst Henri Parkkinen highlights three key factors that investors and those interested in the forest industry’s operating environment should pay attention to in 2026: the pulp market, the development of wood prices, and the impact of exchange rates.

Here is the company report from Antti following Metsä Board’s Q4.  The company’s short-term outlook remains difficult, although ongoing massive efficiency measures and an at least temporary drop in wood prices are creating a path toward an earnings turnaround. However, we cut our near-term volume forecasts as the market recovery continues to drag, which caused our forecasts for the coming years to drop significantly further. We do not see Metsä Board’s expected return as attractive in the short or medium term, considering that the earnings turnaround will take time at best and the potentially structurally weakened operating environment. Quote from the report: Based on our forecasts for 2026 and 2027, Metsä Board’s P/E ratios are 27x and 13x, and the corresponding EV/EBITDA multiples are 9x and 6x. Jussi Halme has made a video about forestry companies  Forest industry – the cornerstone of the Finnish economy and a fundamental pillar of many investors’ portfolios. But is the sector what it used to be? In this video, I dive deep into the current state of the forest sector and analyze the latest Q4/2025 financial statements of Stora Enso and UPM. Forestry companies are currently undergoing a historical transformation. Demand for paper is declining, pulp prices are fluctuating, and the industry is coming off exceptionally difficult years. Yet, something is happening beneath the surface: billion-euro investments in the bioeconomy, renewable materials, and packaging are starting to bear fruit. Cycle: Has the bottom been reached yet, or has the upswing already eluded us? Valuation: Which one offers a better risk-reward ratio now: the stable UPM or Stora Enso, which is seeking a turnaround? The forest industry is no longer just wood and pulp – it is material technology. Watch the analysis and my thoughts on why I personally still keep both companies in my portfolio.

A few observations on UPM’s year 2025:  Communications Papers sales were below 25% of the entire group’s non-consolidated sales for the first time. That is quite historic in itself. The sunset is inevitably looming for the former core business. Pulp has increasingly become UPM’s main business area, accounting for about 1/3 of total sales. The pulp mills located in Finland were still operating at a loss in Q4.

Kaukas will be the first of UPM’s pulp mills to reach the end of its technical lifespan. Its core structures date back to the early 90s. Within the next five years, a decision will need to be made on whether to extend its lifecycle or close it down. Furthermore, it has faced the most downtime in recent years, which suggests it is likely the least profitable of UPM’s three pulp mills in Finland. With current wood prices, the business case probably isn’t strong enough for investments.

The acquisition, signing of which was announced on 23 January 2026, strengthens Metsä Board's sheeting capacity and service capabilities in the European market.The Winschoten facility is one of Europe's largest and most advanced sheeting and distribution hubs, with an annual capacity of approximately 100,000 tonnes and 22 employees. The parties have agreed not to disclose the transaction price. Following the completion, Metsä Board will begin integrating the Winschoten Hub into its European operations, aligning production, logistics and customer service processes.
