Yesterday I watched earnings presentations from 3 companies hyping their opportunities as electricity suppliers for data centers: UPM, Fortum, and the Swedish forest and energy company SCA. In all three cases, the same pattern repeated. There was a lot of talk about data center opportunities. But there was little to bring to the table in terms of signed electricity supply contracts. In practice, UPM, Fortum, and the Swedish “cellulose outfit” were building an investor narrative around looming profits. Analysts also showed great interest in this issue. All talk, no substance? Partly yes, because there aren’t many electricity supply contracts generating bottom-line profits yet. But there was plenty of hype about negotiations here and there. Presumably, company-specific supply agreements will materialize, and power-hungry data centers may raise the general price level to some extent, even as new energy production is created. Fortum can also profit from its sites—i.e., pre-prepared data center plots—as well as district heating from data centers. UPM intends to appoint a new Executive Vice President focused on energy in the near future. Likely starting to constantly run around AI firms. What bothers me here is that they’ve gotten a bit ahead of themselves regarding the timeline in creating these investor narratives. At this rate, electricity will start flowing to data centers, but probably not significantly until 3–4 years from now. The analyst community is also running a bit hot; for example, Fortum’s investor event last autumn started to take on amusing characteristics because of this (luckily the ever-cool @Juha_Kinnunen and @Antti_Viljakainen haven’t been bitten by the data center bug yet ). While AI and data centers are today’s buzzwords, industrial green investments—which are even more significant in terms of electricity consumption—have partly been overshadowed. They will materialize—to the extent they do—probably in the early 2030s. The wars in Iran and Ukraine are now acting as major catalysts. So, patience! Ps. Exceptionally, I posted the same text on both UPM’s and Fortum’s pages. @Sijoittaja-alokas may remove one of them if they see fit.

And here is the report on Metsä Board as well, in Antti’s style.  We reiterate our reduce recommendation and 3.00 euro target price for Metsä Board. The company’s market situation remains difficult, and we have further cut our near-term volume and earnings forecasts. The macro implications of the war in Iran do not help the company’s earnings turnaround either, although the ongoing and well-progressed massive efficiency measures and the declining wood prices are narrowing the company’s losses this year. We still do not find Metsä Board’s expected return attractive, considering the earnings turnaround that will take time even at best and the potentially structurally weakened operating environment. Here is the company report from Antti following UPM’s Q1 results  The overall picture of UPM’s Q1 report was, in our view, fairly neutral. We did not make any material forecast changes after the report. The stock is not cheap in the short term (2026e: P/E 16x), even though earnings should turn to growth this year from a low level despite risks related to the operating environment. Thus, we reiterate our EUR 24.00 target price and Reduce recommendation for UPM. I calculated the capacity utilization rates for UPM’s various units in Q1 based on publicly available information. The capacity data is from UPM’s 2025 annual report: Fibres South (annual capacity 3.4 Mt, Q1 deliveries 0.824 Mt) → utilization rate 97% Fibres North (annual capacity 2.37 Mt, Q1 deliveries 0.589 Mt) → utilization rate 99% Specialty Materials (annual capacity 2.00 Mt, Q1 deliveries 0.367 Mt) → utilization rate 73% Communication Papers (annual capacity 3.70 Mt, Q1 deliveries 0.726 Mt) → utilization rate 78% Observations:  UPM is running its Finnish pulp mills at full capacity, while at the same time Metsä Group is partially idling its mills. Similarly, the mills in Uruguay are being run practically at full capacity. Specialty Materials managed a decent result, even though the mills are heavily underutilized. The situation for Communication Papers is weak; paper machines should be closed immediately, but it’s unlikely anything will happen until the SAPPI situation reaches some kind of conclusion. Then things will happen..

Listing estimated for 2 November 2026. ”Following the completion of the demerger, WISA Group will be one of the leading European plywood producers, with a strong market position in key end-use segments. WISA Group offers high-quality plywood and veneer products for construction, vehicle flooring, LNG shipbuilding, parquet manufacturing, and other industrial applications. It has seven production units across five production sites in Finland and Estonia, with a theoretical maximum capacity of approximately 785,000 cubic meters per year. Interesting guidance considering that Q1 2026 has been reported, and one-third of Q2 2026 is already behind us. So, Q1 2026 comparable EBIT was EUR 274 million, meaning Q2 2026 falls within the range of EUR 51–251 million.  Quite a wide range. Is it the uncertainty of the Leuna ramp-up? Paper market weakness, the pulp market, or energy prices in Q2 2026 are unlikely to explain the width of the range.  Revenue for the first quarter of the year was EUR 2,505 million. Comparable EBIT was EUR 274 million, which is 5 percent lower than last year. The comparable EBIT margin was 10.9%, at the same level as last year.   Outlook UPM’s comparable EBIT for the first half of 2026 is expected to be approximately EUR 325–525 million (EUR 413 million in the first half of 2025 and EUR 508 million in the second half of 2025).
