In the case of mMIMO, MI’s baseband strategy becomes interesting because L1-low terminates at the RU. If some GPU variant is used for L1 at the baseband end, a separate, (even) lower-power and feature-stripped GPU variant would be needed at the RU end – or a dedicated SoC and dedicated L1-low SW for it. This difficult equation is complicated by low volumes; Nvidia would also need to see other markets for such a GPU variant. MI may ultimately have to design a dedicated SoC for the RU; the RU is quite sensitive regarding the thermal budget, where MI has had challenges that have manifested as quality issues.
