Nordea is a banking company. The company offers a range of financial services, aimed at both private and corporate customers, including traditional asset management, loan financing and pension savings. In addition, it also offers advice and security insurance, as well as currency management. Nordea has the largest operations in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The company was founded in 1997 and its headquarters are located in Helsinki.

That comes at least from the Companies Act, that a public limited company cannot make a decision that would result in it holding more than 10 percent of its own shares.

The General Meeting 2025 authorized the purchase of a maximum of 340 million shares for the purpose of optimizing the capital structure. Of this, 19 million shares have been used in the program started in June and 16 million shares in the program started in October. Thus, just over 300 million shares of authorization remain, although, of course, the euros will not be sufficient for the maximum amount.

It’s curious, whether it’s a secured or a botched situation, that there’s authorization to buy 300 million shares - worth approximately 5 billion euros, which would be about 10 percent of the total number of shares… When, on the other hand, this purchasable batch is limited to 500 million euros.

As announced in July 2018 the transaction covers the acquisition of all shares in Gjensidige Bank as well as a strategic partnership agreement with Gjensidige Forsikring with respect to mutual distribution of non-life insurance and financial products in Norway. The acquisition has been approved by the Norwegian Competition Authority and the Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway.  Gjensidige Bank will until further notice continue to operate as an independent bank under its current brand name. Nordea welcomes Gjensidige Bank customers and employees. "This acquisition underlines our strategy and ambition to grow in the important Norwegian market. Our goal is to provide our customers with a broader selection of services and innovative banking solutions.
