Oriola is a pharmaceutical group with a particular focus on the distribution of pharmaceuticals to other players in the industry. The company offers services to pharmacies and other pharmaceutical companies, which includes, for example, negotiations with suppliers and distribution of products. The largest operations are in the Nordic and Baltic regions. The headquarters are located in Espoo.

Here is the company report on Oriola from Rauli following the Q2 results   Oriola’s Q2 results were slightly below our forecasts. We project that the company will barely reach the earnings improvement it guided for the full year. We estimate that Oriola has the potential for a moderately rising earnings trend, but we consider that the major investment projects of the coming years and the balance sheet value of the associate company Kronans (Kronans Apotek) also present risks. On the other hand, the company could unlock value through structural changes. Regarding revenue, it is easier to expect a positive continuation from Kronans, but it could be affected by potential rationalization of the store network. I wouldn’t dare promise a positive trend for earnings development yet, as Kronans’ quarters have been quite volatile. The CEO also mentioned the same in the interview (link below). The ERP project does indeed seem to be dragging on, and it was originally planned to continue through next year anyway. So, I would guess that we will still see ERP-related costs in 2028, but at least throughout next year.

In principle, the hallmarks of an ERP project at a Finnish listed company are as follows:  a) The project is never completed  b) The project fails, and  c) The project costs more than expected. The company itself admits that things have gone pear-shaped: “Lessons learned from the first implementation of Oriola’s ERP and warehouse management system renewal program in Sweden are being taken into account in the changes made to the program and its schedule.” If everything went perfectly, the ERP project might be completed by 2028, but as we all know, the result will be adjusted with expense items for years after that. When you add the costs and risks of the new distribution center, Kronans’ still weak profitability, and the dividend cuts to this, there are far too many red flags. I still wonder why the CEO hasn’t been replaced.

Here are Rauli’s quick comments on Oriola’s Q2 result   Oriola’s Q2 report was operationally slightly softer than we expected, as the company’s adjusted EBITDA remained at the level of the comparison period and was slightly weaker than our forecasts. In particular, we expected an improvement in the earnings of the Products segment, but instead, profitability was burdened by increased freight costs and business expenses in both segments. The associate company Kronans, on the other hand, improved its earnings more than we expected. The company reiterated its guidance for a full-year improvement in adjusted EBITDA, which now rests on the second half of the year. Kronans Apotek nearly broke even in Q2, with a result of -0.2 MEUR. Can we assume that the positive earnings trend and revenue growth will continue in H2? When will the one-off ERP costs be finalized?

Here are Rauli’s preliminary comments ahead of the company’s Q2 earnings report on Friday, July 17th:   We expect the company’s revenue and adj. EBITDA to grow slightly from the comparison period. However, losses from the associate company Kronans and one-off items related to IT system investments continue to weigh on the reported figures. We believe Oriola will reiterate its full-year guidance regarding growth in adjusted EBITDA.
