Terveystalo operates in the healthcare sector. The company offers services and solutions such as surveys and examinations, training and coaching, rehabilitation, and health and fitness mapping. Its customers include small and medium-sized corporate customers, as well as public sector players. The head office is located in Helsinki.

Doctors do the doctoring and managers do the leading. Wasn’t the core of this current strategy an integrated care pathway, which is now expanding towards eye health? In other words, adding more length and entry points to the care pathway.

Business professionals are required for that, not clinicians, so that aspect is on the right track; whether the right professionals were chosen is another matter. In Europe, it has long been common for even hospitals to be run by business people, and judging by the state of public healthcare, that should be the case here as well.

Management must, of course, be business professionals. However, this management has not been able to create a coherent strategy and execute it. Growth is a good thing, but not on a foundation of sand. Right now, they are expanding in a state of panic while the core business stumbles from side to side like a drunken sailor. The Alpha program turned out to be a dud. Now they are rolling the dice with shareholders’ money. Little good is likely to come of this. I believe in synergies mainly regarding management and administration, but absolutely not in terms of cross-selling or procurement. You can count on synergies just as much as you could on the Alpha program—which is to say, not at all.

Grow or die. Terveystalo is essentially operating as it should. Without taking a stance on the current management, doctors or priests should not lead anything related to business. Of course, their opinions can be consulted.

Terveystalo’s CEO doesn’t understand anything about clinical reality and tries to cover up this ignorance by using plenty of foreign loanwords and surrounding themselves with commercially-oriented representatives who are just as clinically incompetent. Relations with the practitioners providing the services have run aground, the competition for occupational health care has been lost to Mehiläinen, and smaller companies are further tightening the competition. For some reason, highly educated experts refuse to work as subcontractors for Terveystalo. Now Terveystalo is looking to find “synergies” from dental and eye care, but since the mindset remains exactly the same as before, the end result will be exactly the same. The bosses should be replaced, and clinical directors should be brought in as early as the strategy creation phase. Currently, the talk is just Musk-like bluster devoid of reality.

These reflections on new diagnostics performed via the eyes are definitely not something for this decade; we’re talking more about this potentially happening in the 2030s or 2040s. It’s really not worth expecting Terveystalo to generate any euros from that perspective in the coming years.

Admittedly, my initial reaction was shock, and fundamentally I don’t like erratic shifts in strategy… But on the other hand, if there is new information that supports a change in strategy, one shouldn’t stubbornly hang onto the old one either. On first reading, it also seemed a bit vague where the synergies would come from. But they could potentially be achievable.  Cross-selling services to customers even more than in the Silmäasema case. Integrating eye health and dental care into the occupational healthcare offering.  If, for example, large occupational healthcare clients could be persuaded to include eye and dental check-ups in their packages—even at a so-called “loss leader” price—a high percentage of those patients requiring follow-up procedures could be converted into customers at normal margins. In addition, the CEO’s interview mentioned the possibilities of diagnosing diseases from the eyes. If this starts to materialize within a year or two, such an integration is a no-brainer. And it must be done before competitors do, so that the FCCA (KKV) doesn’t interfere with the consolidation yet. Waiting for the track record…
