Nokia is a global telecommunications company. The company offers solutions in IP, broadband, digital health, and cloud-based systems. Nokia was founded in 1865 and the head office is located in Esbo, Finland.

https://www.nokia.com/blog/2025-optical-transformation-coffee-and-ai/ The year 2025 has been a turning point for Nokia’s optical networks, especially thanks to the Infinera merger and the demand surge created by artificial intelligence (AI). Coherent Pluggable Modules (800G ZR/ZR+) 2025 was the breakthrough year for 800G pluggable modules. They are no longer just speed upgrades, but are changing network architecture:  Multi-haul performance: For the first time, pluggable modules (such as Nokia’s ICE-X) are able to cover almost all network needs: 800G speeds reach 1,700 kilometers and lower speeds even over 5,000 kilometers. Explosive market growth: Demand forecasts have more than doubled during the year. Deliveries of over 100,000 units are expected in 2026, with the goal of exceeding one million units by 2030.   Throughout the year, multiple industry analysts more than doubled their forecasts to reflect the growing demand. Analyst projections now show a rapid ramp – growing from several thousand units in 2025 to more than 100,000 units in 2026 and exceeding 1 million by 2030. Vendors are updating their supply chain, processes and partnerships to deliver the production capacity required to support this rapid growth.  Thin Transponders “Thin transponders” emerged as a key topic of discussion in 2025, offering a middle ground between traditional optics and direct router integration:  Use case: They enable the benefits of pluggable modules (such as 800G ZR/ZR+) for operators for whom direct IPoDWDM (optics directly in the router) is not suitable for operational reasons. Benefits: They save up to 50% space and 40% power compared to traditional embedded transponders, while maintaining optical network manageability and security features (e.g., encryption).  “Scale Across” – A New Dimension of AI DCI (Data Center Interconnect) has been joined by a new architecture called Scale Across:  Why: Individual data centers are running out of space and power (e.g., with the goal of million-GPU clusters). What: Scale across connects geographically distributed GPU clusters into a single unified computing resource. This requires extremely low latency and high-capacity optical links, where 800G pluggables play a critical role.  Optical Line Systems (OLS) and Automation  Multi-fiber OLS: Hundreds, even over 1,000 fiber pairs are now being installed between data centers at once. Line systems must evolve to support multiple fibers in the same physical size (e.g., multi-rail OLS). AI automation: AI is now being used for predictive maintenance and troubleshooting, helping operators move from reactive operations to proactive network management.  In summary: Nokia’s (and Infinera’s) focus has shifted strongly toward AI-driven optical infrastructure, where 800G pluggable modules and new “thin transponder” solutions enable massive scalability with lower power consumption.

Nokia had over 70% market share in Indonesia (all operators) about 15 years ago. Today’s figure is less than 20%. With the largest operator, Telkomsel, the share is 0% (it was 70%).  AI-RAN plans strongly resemble Indonesia’s 5G and mmW plans just under ten years ago and 4G plans about twenty years ago. The plans were great, but the reality 10 years later is that the 5G share is about 5-10% and the 4G share is slightly over 90%. According to the 4G plans, 2G was supposed to be shut down in 2010 – 20 years later, it is still in operation. But this is history and now, of course, everything is different. In a few years, we will be marveling at case studies on how a nationwide AI-RAN network was built with a 3 USD ARPU.

The country has 280 million inhabitants, Jakarta is the world’s largest city, 42 million. The potential is huge. On the other hand, over 17,000 islands, which is a completely different market. Nokia seems to have made some deals there.

The three companies obtained a declaration that a willing licensor in Nokia’s position would agree to an interim licence until the “reasonable and non-discriminatory” terms of a patent licence were decided by the court. Judge James Mellor said the interim licence would require Acer, Asus and Hisense to pay Nokia $0.365 per device sold, more than the $0.03 per unit proposed by Acer and Asus but less than the $0.69 sought by Nokia.

Yeah, time will tell. Though I think the CEO at least implies that more would happen.   I think that statement means that 55,000 base stations will be equipped with Nvidia’s computing power.

I wonder if it’s so-called image marketing. I would be surprised if even 5% of the sites in Indonesia were Nvidia AI-RAN sites by 2032.
