Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest travel hubs, has taken a major step forward in its sustainability ambitions by partnering with Kempower to deliver a powerful new charging infrastructure for its growing fleet of electric apron buses and ground service equipment.

In 2025, Kempower installed three new DC charging sites at Schiphol Airport to support the airport’s expanded airside electric vehicle fleet. Schiphol is committed to achieving zero emissions in its own ground operations by 2030.

Schiphol Airport, which served 75.9 million passengers in 2024, has been a frontrunner in sustainable operations, operating over 200 electric buses since 2018. As it expands with a new fleet of 58 electric apron buses in partnership with Kempower, the airport is upgrading its first generation chargers to a modern, scalable charging infrastructure. This shift supports cleaner air and reduced emissions for passengers, staff, and the surrounding community.

Kempower’s solution for Schiphol includes four Kempower Control Units and 12 double-armed Kempower Satellites, delivering a total of 28 DC charging points for the airport’s new electric fleet, and more central charging hubs are engineered and will be executed in the coming years.

Kempower’s CCS2 chargers provide a standardized solution compatible with all current and future EVs in the fleet, from buses to ground support vehicles. The new DC charging system uses dynamic power allocation technology, automatically distributing available power based on vehicle demand. This ensures high power availability and optimized grid usage, which is essential in an environment where grid constraints can be challenging. Kempower’s modular design ensures maximum uptime and allows easy expansion in the future.

Security was also a critical consideration. Kempower’s ISO 27001 certification ensures the highest standards of information security and cybersecurity for the airport’s charging infrastructure.

“We are proud to support Schiphol Airport, an international leader in sustainable aviation, with this project,” said Han Dix, Country Manager Benelux at Kempower. “Schiphol is a great example of how airports can move decisively towards electrification and carbon-neutral operations. We look forward to continuing this partnership as Schiphol accelerates its sustainability goals.”

As airports around the world look to cut emissions and adopt electric transport solutions, Schiphol’s electrification journey – supported by Kempower – stands out as a blueprint for the sector.

“Electrification of our ground support equipment is an important part of our ambition to become an energy-positive airport by 2050,” said Dennis de Cock, Technical Expert Electrification at Royal Schiphol Group. “Standardizing our charging infrastructure with future-proof solutions from suppliers like Kempower allows us to continue scaling up our electric fleet while ensuring reliable, efficient operations.”
