Rejlers future-proofs the Southern Main Line - plans new bypass tracks

Rejlers

Rejlers has been commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration to produce a railway plan, system document and tender documents for the Slätthult bypass track project, south of Älmhult in Kronoberg and Skåne counties.

The assignment is part of the Swedish Transport Administration's investment to increase capacity and improve punctuality on the Southern Main Line - one of Sweden's busiest railway routes for both passenger and freight traffic.

The project includes the planning and design of two new bypass tracks for trains up to 750 metres, which will enable smoother train encounters and more efficient traffic management. The work includes track, ground, signaling, electricity, catenary and telecommunications design, as well as environmental investigations, permit processes, coordination and deliveries in accordance with the Swedish Transport Administration's requirements. Rejlers is also responsible for management data, quality assurance and support in handover to contracting.

The new bypass tracks at Slätthult will be a strategic reinforcement of the capacity between Alvesta, Älmhult and Hässleholm - a stretch that currently has major capacity challenges. With increasing traffic volumes and the future Fehmarn Belt link, the measure will be central to creating a robust, reliable and future-proof railway system. Improved accessibility is expected to contribute to increased punctuality, more efficient freight transport and more reliable train journeys for passengers.

The work will begin in autumn 2025. The review document for the railway plan will be delivered at the beginning of 2027, followed by the completed plan and system document in the autumn of the same year. Construction documents and tender documents are planned for autumn 2028.

"The assignment at Slätthult is an important step in increasing capacity on the Southern Main Line. It is gratifying that we can continue to contribute with our collective railway expertise in close collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration. Together, we create solutions that strengthen the infrastructure for both current and future passengers", says Hamzeh Hassoun, Business Area Manager for Railways at Rejlers.

"With a focus on sustainable solutions, we create the conditions for a robust and future-proof railway system. By combining technical expertise and long-term planning, we contribute to a more reliable and efficient train service that benefits society", says Albin Holmberg, Business Area Manager for Railways at Rejlers.
