Peab has been commissioned to rebuild and enlarge Viskan Prison in Torpshammar. The customer is Intea Viskan AB and the contract is worth SEK 450 million.
Viskan Prison needs more cells and Peab has been commissioned to expand the prison for another 120 inmates. This means building a residential building with 60 residential cells. In addition to this, premises for isolation, visits, employment and administration will be expanded through renovations and extensions at the prison.
Viskan Prison was reopened in 2025 after a complete renovation. Today it is a class 2 prison with cells for 144 inmates and is leased by the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.
"It's challenging to rebuild prisons with ongoing operations where everyday life for inmates and staff must function without the slightest effect on security. That makes careful planning essential in this type of project. Because we have dedicated and solution-oriented employees who, with our client's expert staff and the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, have carried out a well thought-out planning process, we can now look forward to begin production," says Fredrik Timan, Region Manager Peab.
The project is a turnkey contract in partnering. This was preceded by a so-called phase 1 agreement where Peab was contracted to optimize the project with the right quality as well as handle risks and uncertainties together with Intea Viskan AB and the Swedish Prison and Probation Service. The project is now entering phase 2, which entails signing a construction contract.
The work has begun and is expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2027.
The project will be order registered in business area Construction in the second quarter 2026.
