Norcod has successfully commenced fish oil production at its Kråkøy harvesting facility, enabling almost every part of every harvested cod to be utilised and generate value for the company.
In the first two weeks of operation, the Norwegian cod farmer’s new facility has produced more than 14 tonnes of high-quality fish oil. The in-house factory will enable Norcod to produce fish oil from almost all offcuts from its cod harvesting, including parts of the fish that were previously destined for ensilage.
The factory was installed at Kråkøy Norcod over the summer following an investment of around NOK 20 million and is a major step towards maximising utilisation and revenue from every part of the cod. The fish oil is intended for use in the nutritional supplements market, providing Norcod with an additional source of revenue from its existing production.
More value from every fish
Norcod CEO Christian Riber said: “Achieving 98 percent utilisation of our harvested cod, with all products destined for human consumption, is a significant milestone for Norcod and something we are very proud of. Our goal has always been to create the greatest possible value from every fish we produce, and this milestone demonstrates how responsible resource management and commercial opportunities can go hand in hand.
“By making better use of all the fish, we are not only reducing waste but also creating an additional revenue stream and strengthening the overall sustainability and profitability of our operations.”
Managing Director of Kråkøy Norcod, Roger Sørgård, said: “We are very pleased with the first weeks of operation. We are now producing high-quality fish oil not only from cod livers, but also from guts and intestines that previously went to ensilage. Initial laboratory results are encouraging, confirming the quality of oil produced from a mixture of processing offcuts. After months of preparation, it is rewarding to see us extracting more value from every fish.”
